Bailey gets her reverse walker

Giving Back 2 Our Community (GB2C) in conjunction with the Meyer Beukes Warriors on Wheels Foundation recently made the handover to the two-year-old.

Bailey Tumber is taking it one step at a time with her new reverse walker. Giving Back 2 Our Community (GB2C) in conjunction with the Meyer Beukes Warriors on Wheels Foundation recently made the handover to the two- year-old.

Bailey was born with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) coupled with congenital spina bifida and club feet. The toddler’s hip joint has not formed normally. DDH prevents it from functioning properly, causing the joint to wear out faster than normal.

As a result, she has had to endure a number of surgeries to correct her condition. This has not been easy for her family and has resulted in financial constraints for her father, Hugon, and mother, Candice. Her mother told Lowvelder in January that Bailey’s last operation had been on November 27. She went home with casts on both legs.

Jo-anne Wearne, spokesperson for GB2C, said, “GB2C has previously helped Bailey with a mini wheelchair. The reverse walker will help teach her how to walk after her recent hip surgery. “GB2C was initiated by Nelspruit Crossing in October 2019. It has assisted the Meyer Beukes Warriors on Wheels Foundation, with funding to buy mobility devices throughout last year.”

The Meyer Beukes Warriors on Wheels Foundation is a non-profit organisation that donates mini wheelchairs, standing frames and walkers to underprivileged special needs children.

“The NPO was founded by Kylah Beukes whose child, Meyer, was born with spina bifida. The family is based in the Lowveld,” said Wearne.

“Businesses and individuals that are part of GB2C include Crossing SUPERSPAR, BUCO Nelspruit, the Visagie Group, the Tom le Roux and Omar families and many others,” she explained.
