Spaza shop raid in Acornhoek uncovers illicit cigarettes and unlicensed gun

A 38-year-old man was arrested after police discovered illicit cigarettes and an unlicensed firearm during a joint compliance operation

A 38-year-old suspect was arrested on May 20 for possession of illicit cigarettes and an unlicensed firearm in Acornhoek.


According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Captain Mpho Nonyane-Mpe, the arrest followed a joint operation involving local police, the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, and the Stock Theft Unit.

The team was conducting compliance inspections at spaza shops and livestock inspection operations across the Acornhoek policing area when the arrest was made.


“During the operation, members visited a spaza shop at the Acornhoek Old Complex as part of ongoing compliance inspections. Upon searching the premises, police discovered illicit cigarettes and an unlicensed firearm,” said Nonyane-Mpe.

She added that the confiscated items will form part of the ongoing investigation.


The suspect is expected to appear in the Acornhoek Magistrate’s Court on charges related to possession of illicit cigarettes and an unlicensed firearm.
