WATCH: Fatality, looting and traffic jam as cement truck overturns

On Tuesday afternoon, a cement truck overturned near De Rust in Hazyview, causing the driver to be fatally wounded. The truck was looted by local residents.

Motorists driving into Hazyview were stationary for about an hour while the scene was being cleared.
It is reported that the driver indicated to the passenger moments before the crash that the truck’s steering and brakes were not functioning properly.

Hi-Tech Medical Services was on the scene and transported the passenger to Mathekwane Hospital to be treated for injuries. The driver died on the scene.

“The extrication process took about three hours, due to the degree of damage to the truck’s cabin.” said Hi-Tech Medical Services’ Tristan van Huyssteen. “As far as we can tell, the truck was transporting cement for a private company. He was not the owner of the truck.”
