UPDATE: Court interpreter arrested for corruption

A court interpreter in the Mkhuhlu Court in Calcutta appeared in the Bushbuckridge Magistrate’s Court today on charges of corruption.

Busizwe Zizwe Zitha (40) was arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team on Friday April 16.

It is alleged that he approached an accused in a case of domestic violence earlier this year and promised to have the case withdrawn in exchange for money.

Though the money was paid, the case against the accused was never withdrawn, as interpreters do not have the authority to do so.

Zitha then reportedly continued demanding money from the accused, stating that he needed to pay the prosecutor in the case in order for the docket to be destroyed.

As the case kept being postponed, the accused in the domestic violence case realised he was being extorted and took the case to the Hawks, which led to the subsequent arrest.

A second complainant also came forward on Friday before the arrest was made.

He was remanded in custody. The case was postponed until April 22 for possible bail application.
