Difficult road to recovery lies ahead for teen

After two operations to repair femur and toe fractures, Selanna Biggs (19) is only in the beginning stage of her recovery.

Biggs survived a car accident just over a week ago in which she was pinned in her car for more than 24 hours.

She was reported missing by her parents on April 10 and it sparked a huge community search. She was found the next day in the wreckage of her car about three kilometres from Kaapsehoop.

Since Biggs’ accident she has undergone two operations to repair a bad femur fracture to her left leg as well as a broken toe. “The doctor says it is was a very bad break (the femur) and the chances of needing a bone transplant in a couple of months are huge, but he will X-ray periodically to establish if and when this would be necessary,” Milly Biggs, her mother, said.

Five years ago Selanna was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis which is an autoimmune disorder that can complicate her recovery time.

Her doctors estimate that it will take more than a year.

She did, however, receive an oxygen chamber from biokineticist, Hannelie Jurgens, to help her heal faster.

Selanna was discharged from Mediclinic Nelspruit on Tuesday and will be recovering at home. “We are eternally grateful that she is alive and to every single person who has phoned, brought food and prayed,” Milly said.
