In-house debate at Hoërskool Barberton
Hoërskool Barberton held its quarterly in-house debating competition last week.

Zenora Khan and Willem van den Berg facilitated the debating club. They helped the learners to come up with their arguments and judged the debate itself.
Due to Covid-19 regulations, the school is currently split along gender lines. Thus two girls’ teams competed against each other.
Each one consisted of four members. Mpho Songo acted as chairperson and facilitated the debate.
The topic this term was “Should violent video games be banned?”

The team that was pro the motion won. This team consisted of Vania Jose, Refiloe Maluleke, Cassandra Smith and California Bwahali. The opposing team included Salmaanah Essa, Tanaka Musanza, Nokukhanya Nkosi, and Siyanda Maziya.
“The girls were very enthusiastic and had their points well prepared,” said Khan. “The opposition also fought very hard.”
