Call for nominations for boards of weather service, SANParks and biodiversity institute extended

The current boards' three-year terms are coming to an end, and new suitable candidates are sought. Requirements are listed in the respective Government Gazettes.

The minister of forestry, fisheries and the environment, Barbara Creecy, has extended the call for nominations of suitable persons to serve on the boards of the South African Weather Service (SAWS), the South African National Parks (SANParks) and the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) to May 10.

The call for the appointment of new board members comes as a result of the end of the three-year term of the current boards, and is in terms of the South African Weather Services Act, the National Environment Management: Protected Areas Act and the National Environment Management Biodiversity Act, respectively.

“Persons to be appointed on the boards will have a duty to ensure the entities serve the interests of all South Africans and contribute to the realisation of the constitutional right in an environment that is not harmful to their health and well-being,” said Creecy.

In this regard, the boards will be charged with the responsibilities of steering the entities to compliance with prevailing corporate governance standards, while exercising oversight of the organisations and making decisions about important issues they face.

Therefore, nominees for each of the entities must have suitable experience or expertise in strategic management and leadership, community development, financial management, audit and risk management, corporate governance, water resource management, air quality management and protected areas management, among others.

Furthermore, a member of the board must be fit and proper to hold office, and have the appropriate qualifications. As such, the appointment procedure to be employed will entail vetting of the shortlisted candidates, verification of their qualifications with the South African Qualifications Authority and cabinet consultations.

Details regarding documents required for submissions of nominations are contained in Government Gazette no 44490, 44491 and 44492, accessible at the links below:
