Food for Life extends a helping hand

Food for Life Nelspruit recently reached out to the communities of Mataffin and KaBokweni with 800 plates of vegetarian biryani.

“It was quite an emotional day for the team as there were a lot of small children,” said Mahesh Srini, executive committee member of Food for Life Nelspruit. “However, to be able to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate than us, is what makes it worthwhile.”

The non-profit organisation (NPO), part of the national Food for Life SA, is affiliated to the international parent NPO, Food for Life Global.

According to Srini, the organisation is now the largest vegetarian food relief programme worldwide; it is active in more than 60 countries with at least five centres in Mpumalanga alone.

“We’ve been serving both cooked meals and food parcels on a monthly basis to the communities of Mbombela for the past few years,” he said. “We try to reach as many as possible with the limited funding available.”

Srini stated Food for Life Nelspruit has about 50 volunteers and is largely funded by donations.

“The organisation aims to reach out to more areas that are in dire need of stability; not only during this pandemic, but also in the short to medium term to help families to get back on their feet,” he said.
