National SAPS to address Mbombela backlog

Local police officers have said they wait several weeks to several months for their vehicles.

With the Mbombela police still struggling with the major backlog of police vehicle repairs, the national SAPS have said they would respond to queries from Lowvelder soon.

Last week, the newspaper reported that local police officials are at their wits’ end, waiting for their vehicles to be repaired at the Nelspruit Police Garage.

Some officers said they had even resorted to asking civilians for the spare parts necessary to have their vehicles fixed, so they could perform their duties.

At least 40 police vehicles are standing in disuse at the police workshop in the city, waiting to be serviced or repaired.

Some of the vehicles have been there for a few weeks; others have allegedly been standing there for three months.

National media has been reporting on this problem for the past few months, which is allegedly due to the mismanagement of resources and funds.

The national police’s spokesperson, Col Athlenda Mathe, said the national fleet manager had recently tested positive for Covid-19 and would only be able to respond when he was back at work on Monday July 19.
