The mystery of the R40 Beanties birthday billboard

Last week, a billboard fixed on a truck's flatbed trailer suddenly appeared on the R40 to the West End Shopping Centre, in the direction of Barberton.

The billboard, fixed on a truck’s flatbed trailer on the R40, stated that you could win an iPhone if you phoned “Beanties” and wished him a happy birthday, and received varying reactions from locals.

Some were sceptical, seeing as the number displayed the name “John Doe” when entered into the Trucaller app. Others disregarded all scepticism and accredited the sign to a prank by friends.

Many, including Lowvelder, phoned the number, but did not have much luck with wishing “Beanties” a happy birthday, however.

There was either no answer, or in Lowvelder’s case, a somewhat vague conversation with someone who claimed not to be “Beanties”, said he would phone back and then did not answer follow-up calls.

Lowvelder was on the scene moments before the truck with the sign drove off in the direction of White River. The paper spoke to a man who said it was Beanties’ friends who had organised the sign.

He did not want to be named or provide his contact details, and said he needed permission from the person who paid for the sign before speaking to the paper.

He never got back with more information. The billboard has since been removed, and all traces of John “Beanties” Doe along with it.
