WATCH: Courageous Citybug driver brings passengers home to safety
After a terrifying four days, Deon Minnaar, a Citybug driver of more than 10 years, safely brought home 12 passengers from Durban. They arrived yesterday at 18:40 at the Citybug Shuttle Service in Mbombela.
On Sunday July 11, Minnaar and his passengers departed for Durban on Citybug’s scheduled time and route. The route back to Mbombela was planned for Monday morning, but before they departed, Minnaar realised the situation in Durban was dire due to violent protests and looting, and the lives of his passengers would be in danger should they proceed.
They could see smoke from fires and hear shots being fired. At that stage, the roads had already been blocked off, and Citybug’s office had already started looking for alternatives routes, but did not find any that were open.
Minnaar eventually managed to get through a few roadblocks and drive on a few routes to bring the passengers to safety in Pietermaritzburg, where they stayed at the Mountain View Entertainment Centre until yesterday morning.

“We tracked the bus since they left Pietermaritzburg yesterday morning, and it was luckily a safe day to travel,” said Louw du Preez, open and close manager of Citybug Nelspruit.
