Tough times and successes discussed at White River SPCA’s AGM
Estelle de Villiers, chairperson of the organisation, said the SPCA is always in need of new members and more donations, but thanked all for their continued support.

White River SPCA’s annual general meeting was, like most meetings these days, held virtually this year on July 14.
It was firstly mentioned that the SPCA is always in need of new members and more donations, but in the same breath the community was thanked for their continued and loyal support.
Estelle de Villiers, chairperson of the organisation, mentioned specifically that it has been having an extremely difficult time with cooperation and support from the municipality, especially considering the renewal of the society’s memorandum of agreement with the municipality and the accompanying conditions.

Struggles aside, the organisation is thought to have done well throughout the last year.
It has been without a qualified inspector for a year, but has a trainee and qualified field officer as well as kennel hands whom De Villiers thanked for their faithful service.
There have been significant challenges with fundraising due to Covid-19 restrictions and De Villiers mentioned they are in need of much more help from the community than just their opened wallets.
“Help with revamping our boarding kennels will be greatly appreciated,” said De Villiers.
Financially, it was mentioned that goals and standards were not reached this year, but the organisation is expected to do much better in the following year considering the systems that it has in place.
Aside from three new members on the committee, there were no other significant changes to the auditors or the constitution to make note of.

Considering the one vehicle and limited staff it has available, it was mentioned all round that the SPCA does well with the area that it covers.
A slide show was shown of members and tasks completed throughout the year, with both heart-warming and shocking images of situations encountered.
Thanks were given by all to the chairperson and all other members for their continued commitment to the organisation.
