Choir voices echo off Lowveld High walls in tribute

Choir voices echoed off the walls of Lowveld High a week ago as learners and staff remembered those who have died during the Covid-19 pandemic.

In his address outside the school’s main building, principal Jacques Krüger said they were standing there in mourning.

A moment of silence was observed throughout the whole school where after the choir sang the national anthem and then made their way towards the middle of the school, continuing in song.

When it came to the loss of friends and loved ones, Krüger acknowledged the part they played in our lives, but said what is important now is to understand the “responsibility that we have to continue forward without their presence – their legacy will make us strong”.

Bongani Mavundla, the choir conductor, guides the choir through the national anthem.

“Covid has affected many families and Lowveld High has not been spared. We acknowledge and sympathise with those that have been gravely affected. There is a lot of heartsore, a lot of tears and a lot of remembering in our school.”

His words reached out to those who have experienced loss over the last few months due to Covid-19.

“We are there for you and we invite every single member of our school that needs assistance. Please, do not be shy, do not stand back, do not be alone. Let us be in unity.

“This terrible disease will not go away, it will be a part of us for a long time still, but it will also pass if we play our part.

“We have a responsibility towards those next to us, towards ourselves, towards our community and indeed our wonderful country to make sure that we beat this disease.”

The choir starts off their tribute outside the school’s main building beside their principal, Jacques Krüger.

This, he said, will happen by following basic instructions when it comes to things like wearing masks and social distancing.
