FF+ members put sparkle back in reserve

The team was able to fill several bags with rubbish while cleaning the area from 08:00 to 11:00 on Saturday (August 21).

Members of the FF+ took to the Steiltes Nature Reserve to clean the area up on Saturday morning, in the hopes of creating a safer and cleaner area for hikers and dog walkers.

Nelspruit FF+ Youth leader, Liam Richard May, said the reserve had been overwhelmed with rubbish, with most of it falling along the river.

Although the turnout was not very large, the group was still able to fill several bags with rubbish while cleaning the area from 08:00 to 11:00.

“As a community, we should all be getting involved in keeping our areas clean. We have to do it ourselves or no one else will do it,” he said.

Another FF+ member, Freddy Robertson, added that if more residents got involved in cleaning certain areas of Mbombela, the municipality would be more likely to help.

“We have seen in other areas that the municipality is not enthusiastic in dealing with small community groups but will be more likely to engage and help groups that have a larger number.

“We want to get the momentum going and work together. We have hope and not everything is doom and gloom,” he said.
