Seven taxi occupants injured in accident at construction site near Karino

The incident occurred at a construction site on the N4 this Sunday.

Seven people were injured when a taxi drove into a demarcated construction site on the N4, 15 kilometres outside Mbombela, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

ER24’s spokesperson, Ross Campbell, said the paramedics arrived at 02:40 to find the taxi and trailer head-first down an excavated hole. A 44-year-old man with a broken leg was found on the ground nearby.

“He had apparently jumped down from the vehicle after the accident and suffered that injury. He was treated with advanced life support intervention for the pain before being transported to hospital for further treatment,” said Campbell.

“The 33-year-old driver was discovered entrapped. His extraction took three hours with the help of the fire department and the Off-Road Rescue Unit, due to the taxi’s precarious position,” he said.

“The trailer was cut loose, but the taxi could not be towed out due to a pipe. The patient fortunately escaped with only minor injuries and was taken to hospital for further care.”

Five other passengers had suffered minor injuries, but declined transportation to hospital.

TracN4’s spokesperson, Solange Soares, said the accident occurred at a well-demarcated construction site on the N4.

She said there were several relevant warning signs leading up to, at and beyond the site, alerting road users to be cautious and slow down.
