Barberton Mines donates clinic to the community
Healthcare services are now at the doorstep of a community of about 17 000 people in Ward 17, Umjindini.
This is after the construction of a R15,3 million state-of-the-art clinic by Barberton Mines.
This public-private partnership project was initiated in the 2014/15 financial year with August 14 marking the official handover to the community.
The minister of the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, Gwede Mantashe, conducted the handover along with the Mpumalanga premier, Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, members of the executive council and councillors from the City of Mbombela.

The clinic will be able to accommodate up to 70 patients at a time.
Mantashe appealed to the community to protect the clinic against vandalism. “From now on this clinic is your property and therefore you must protect it at all costs. The people who will be treated here are you, not government or Barberton Mines.”

These sentiments were echoed by both the premier and the general manager of Barberton Mines, Jan Thirion.
The MEC for the Department of Economic Development and Tourism, Vusi Mkhatshwa, told the audience that the clinic will contribute towards the attainment of quality health.
