There will be a walkabout by the artist, Walter Voigt, on October 23 at 11:00.

The White River Gallery is currently exhibiting works by Walter Voigt, a man who grew up in the mountainous Lowveld escarpment region near Mbombela.

The exhibition, “Revered Landscapes”, has been on show since October 9 and concludes on the 24th with a walkabout by the artist on October 23 at 11:00.

In the “About the artist” courtesy of the Everard Read Gallery, Voigt’s landscapes are described as being moody and involving broad, energetic strokes followed by lighter more sensitive strokes.

“Voigt is a full-time artist specialising in oil paintings and exhibits his work at the Everard Read Gallery in Rosebank, Johannesburg. He also gives workshops at his studio in Mpumalanga.”

Voigt himself describes his works as “atmospheric spaces designed for contemplation. There is a passionate love affair between earth and sky. A spiritual residue encapsulating the place. They are visual and sensual meditations on colour, light and form.”

The gallery director, Dana McFarlane, said the exhibition opening on October 9 was warmly supported by the arts community, filling the gallery and resulting in much conversation and appreciation from viewers.

“The works on show are alluring, drawing the viewer into all too familiar landscapes that can be experienced on every sensory level in Walter’s typical sweeping brushstrokes and palette knife combination.

“Drawing viewers from afar was the opportunity to listen to the Everard Read Gallery’s chairperson, Mark Read, who delivered powerful words about the beautiful paintings on show.

“He also spoke about the valuable role played by the White River Gallery in promoting art and raising awareness around art as an expression of our culture,” said McFarlane.
