Donate blood ahead of the festive season
SANBS donor centres at i'langa Mall and The Grove will be running Christmas specials, and will be open from December 6 to 12 to give people the opportunity to donate blood before they go on holiday.
As it is preparing for the festive season, the SANBS has asked citizens to go out and donate blood.
“We are aiming to stock up before people go on holiday. We struggle to get the required blood when people are on vacation,” said the local SANBS donor relations practitioner, Lebo Matsimbi.
Matsimbi said the SANBS is also hosting a Bleedathon at Eagles View Play Park on December 5, where the donors will not only be able to donate blood, but also browse through stalls and enjoy the driving range and food and drinks; there will even be a kids’ play area. The Bleedathon will run from 09:00 to 15:00.
Matsimbi added that the donor centres at i’langa Mall and The Grove will also be running Christmas specials, and will be open from December 6 to 12 to give people the opportunity to donate before they go on holiday.
In a recent statement, the SANBS said that although the festive season is fun for most people, it is a difficult period for doctors who work hard to save lives, needing blood and blood products to do so.

The SANBS’s chief operations officer, Ravi Reddy, said, “Traditionally, December is a difficult time for the SANBS. We approach this season with low stocks and we know that we have some tough times ahead if donors do not respond to our call to lend a hand.”
