Studio exhibits a year’s worth of creative artwork
HCN Art Studio held its annual year-end art exhibition at its studio in Sheffield Estate on December 2.
This is the studio’s highlight event, when all the students exhibit their artwork completed throughout the year.
The students tackled a wide range of creative arts with new approaches to each theme and topic, from creating a texture background to doing figure studies in paper art, to observation studies of the subject matter and colour studies such as Dali’s dream art.
The teacher, Hilke Nel, said she was awestruck by the results this year. “To see all these beautiful artworks of growth and creativity throughout the year and the potential these young artists show, is amazing.
“There are so many different characters and personalities coming through in the works. Some artworks are very tight and neat, while others are more expressive and wild, but each artwork has a unique story to tell, which is what I love when I see works displayed on the panels.”
Nel said a few young artists braved the South African Championship of Performing Arts in the beginning of the year, with very good results.

“These artworks were displayed in Johannesburg and we made Mpumalanga proud by bringing home second and third places in the painting categories. The eisteddfod was another successful event held this year; the children who entered fared very well this season.”
The high standard of drawing and painting was evident at the exhibition. Places and prizes were awarded that evening for the various age categories.
Gold went to Jeandrie Viljoen, Alexander Nel, Anike Loubser and Charlie Foss. Catje Froneman, Jawhara Peer, Caleb O’Brein and Simone Neto received silver, and bronze went to Cara Pienaar, Mia van Wyk, Lisa Breed, Lienke Klem, Heinrich Kritzinger and Yiskah Fourie.
