This courageous girl has Down syndrome. She underwent brain surgery at Unitas Hospital in Pretoria on Monday 24 January. Pusher syndrome was subsequently diagnosed after she also suffered severe seizures and had a stroke on Christmas Day 2021.
She also spend time during her recovery at Medi Clinic and the StepMed Rehabilitation Center in Mbombela. She has been back home for the past few weeks.

“We are thankfull that she has started her rehabitation at home after months in the hospital”, said Elaine Thomas, her mother.

Bruce James, chaiperson of Gophers, saw an article about Ilana in the Steelburger/Lydenburg News (Thursday March 3) and contacted her mother. It was evident that Ilana would need a special wheelchair after being released from hospital.

“The Gophers work towards helping people in need throughout the year”, said Bruce James, the chairperson. For more information about the Gophers, phone James on 082 801 6821.
