Praktiseer’s needy family handed groceries
The mother, Maggy (49), was struggling, and had to take medication on an empty stomach, leading to her condition worsening as she was bedridden.
BURGERSFORT – With the assistance of social workers and the Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality (FTLM), the Mkhondo family has something to eat.
This Praktiseer family’s hardships were seen on social media when it emerged that they did not have any
food or groceries.
The mother, Maggy (49), was struggling, and had to take medication on an empty stomach,
leading to her condition worsening as she was bedridden.
She is a single, unemployed mother of five. On Saturday, the family received groceries that included basic food items.
“We are overwhelmed by joy and happiness from receiving food parcels. I will eat healthy and
continue with my medical care treatment,” Maggy said.
She said she was cared for by her 18-year-old daughter, Sarah, who started to be her caregiver since she
was 14, when Maggy became sick and was in and out of hospital.
The heavy load on Sarah led her to failing Grade Eight four times.
According to the family, she was not attending classes and lost focus in her schoolwork as a result of the stress and trauma she endured.
She is currently in Grade Nine, and still takes care of her mother and her two siblings, 11-year-old Constance
and seven-year-old Ashande.
The Mkhondo family survives on child support social grants for the two children, and have to buy food,
groceries, clothes and water.
The family uses firewood to cook and do not have running tap water or electricity. They once more pleaded for donations from locals.
A ward committee member of FTLM, Headman Mamogale, promised the family that they would
put them on their priority list to receive an RDP house
