Close call in Macadamia Retirement Village’s garden competition
With the judging done and prizes ready to be handed out, residents of the Macadamia Retirement Village came together for the prize-giving of the Care Buddies garden competition.
There is nothing quite like a garden competition to make you feel like you are truly in spring.
The White River Care Buddies organised exactly that for the residents of Macadamia Retirement Village. The prize-giving for this competition took place on September 15 and was paired with snacks, coffee and tea to make it the perfect afternoon outing.
Hannes Scholtz, a landscaper by trade, was the judge for the competition, and said he was impressed with the amount of effort residents put into readying their gardens.

They had some interesting and sometimes challenging spaces to work with, but they used them well, said Scholtz.
Various aspects of the gardens were considered in the judging. Scholtz said it was a very close call for the winning position.
Ansie Vlok’s garden was awarded the first prize with a wide variety of plants and everything in its place. Gerhard and Marjorie Beukes’s garden would fit right in with the Lowveld National Botanical Garden, and earned them a second place. Mark Uren’s garden came in third.
The top three were unfortunately unable to attend the prize-giving, and the prizes were accepted on their behalf.
