A father and son (4) lost their lives after their VW Golf, which he was driving, collided head-on with a truck on the R40 in Nkanini near Marite around 04:30 today, September 24.

According to an eyewitness, Delani Nkuna, who had been driving behind the Golf, they had been travelling in Bushbuckridge’s direction from Hazyview and the truck had been driving towards Hazyview when the Golf’s driver suddenly moved from his lane into oncoming traffic.

“The truck driver tried to avoid him, but due to the high speed at which the Golf was travelling, he could not stop or swerve out fully to the other side of the road. They collided head-on. The accident could have been avoided if the Golf’s driver had stayed in his lane,” Nkuna said.

Emergency personnel declared the Golf’s driver dead on the scene. The minor died in hospital. The truck driver sustained minor injuries and was treated on the scene.

The road was blocked, but it has since been cleared. Traffic is currently flowing once again. The police are investigating the matter.
