Things heat up at SUPERSPAR on Heritage Day
The chilli-eating competition saw 12 Lowvelder's brave the heat for a SPAR voucher, however, instead of just one winner, the contest produced three chilli-eating champions.
SUPERSPAR Crossing went all out to celebrate this year’s Heritage Day with not only a Spice and Sauce Festival, but a chilli-eating contest, too.

Various spice and sauce brands set up their tables outside the SUPERSPAR at the Crossing Centre on Saturday morning, offering SPAR customers and visitors to the centre the opportunity to taste some delicious food and snacks.

The talented and lively Izanethemba Marimba Band was present and put on a performance to remember. Soon, people were crowding around the skilled musicians, dancing and clapping along to the music.

The honorary rangers had a table set up during the festival and chatted with interested members of the public about the work they do.

The main event of the day was, of course, the chilli-eating competition, in which 12 people took part to stand the chance of winning a R6 000 SPAR voucher.

Most of the contestants managed to stay in the game right until the end, until after the last chilli of the competition, the Carolina Reaper, was eaten.

The Reaper is known as the hottest chilli in the world and had almost all the contestants in tears. A knockout round was held, in which the remaining few contenders had to eat several other chillies.
