The Lowveld Security Joint Operation Command (JOC) said they would be monitoring the situation, and that the Mpumalanga SAPS and members of the Mbombela Traffic Department are currently in attendance.

The JOC has cautioned that there are over 200 people present at the protest, and advised motorists to be cautious when travelling around the Riverside area.

Cosatu embarked on the march, starting at The Grove in Riverside, to commemorate the International Day for Decent Work.

According to a press statement from Cosatu, the day is marked to address factors that impede workers’ rights, such as conditions of employment, safety, and all other issues related to physical and mental integrity in the workplace.

“The Federation will deliver the memorandum of demands to both the MEC for agriculture, land affairs and rural development [Busisiwe Shiba] and the premier of the province [Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane] respectively,” read the statement.
