Youth urged to focus on agriculture in Limpopo

Job sustainability remains one of the biggest obstacles.

Aspirant and established youth in agriculture were empowered during the Makhuduthamaga Youth in Agriculture Summit held at the Kgaola Mafiri (Gymnasium) in Dichoueng.

The summit was organised in order to engage in an information-sharing exercise and to provide the youth with opportunities and experience in the sector. Cllr Namudi Matjomane of Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality.

“Its sustainability remains the biggest job creator and contributes immensely towards development and food security in rural communities. Therefore programmes and empowerment sessions such as this will go a long way in improving the sector and sustaining livelihoods.”

Presentations from the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA), the Limpopo Economic Development Agency (LEDA) and the Limpopo Department of Agriculture informed the participants about accessibility to funding opportunities, as well as understanding the hurdles confronting the sector.

The youth appreciated the capacity-building experience. They said lack of information, start-up capital, the land question and challenges in accessing financial support remain some of the challenges they face in the sector.
