White River SPCA receives a significant boost

Community gives generously at White River SPCA fete

For the sixth year in a row, Lowvelders came out in vibrant and generous support of the SPCA’s annual fundraising fête held at Da Loose Mongoose outside White River on Saturday.
Locals were treated to great live music, the open bar and restaurant, splendid weather, and a huge variety of stalls selling everything from teddy bears and indigenous plants, to books, funky clothing and kids’ cuddly toys.

White River SPCA’s (WRSPCA) chairperson, Estelle de Villiers, said, “The fête was a great success. We raised R17 000, which will significantly help with ongoing running costs.”
De Villiers said donations and funding over the last few years have been heavily impacted by Covid as well as White River’s ever-expanding population. The latter has led to more and more distressed and hurt animals being brought to the WRSPCA and its tireless group of eight staff members.

“We are servicing a much bigger and more populated area than five years ago, and funding has dropped off significantly. We rely on donations to buy dog food and to maintain the escalating operating costs,” she said.
This year’s fête benefited from the generous contributions from Steve Hyson of Da Loose Mongoose, Caterworld White River, and musicians Soul Taxi as well as funky vibes from DJ Toshana and Cand-e.
WRSPCA is starting new community projects, including a sustainable organic vegetable garden, and welcomes all the support it can muster.
