Bakkie’s trailer gets stuck in deep sinkhole in Lydenburg

This sinkhole is nearly invisible during night.

A sinkhole that started to develop in Viljoen Street near the low-water bridge towards the industrial area last weekend, claimed its first victim.

A trailer was being pulled by a Toyota single-cab bakkie on May 3 at 20:26. The trailer’s two wheels got stuck in the sinkhole, but the Toyota was not damaged.

Emergency services had to assist to pull the trailer out of the sinkhole.

Directly after the massive sinkhole was cordoned off last week, danger tape and barriers kept motorists from driving into it.
But on Wednesday night, May 3, only a flimsy piece of danger tape was flapping in the wind to warn motorists.

Throughout the week, residents and motorists speculated about the possibility of this happening.

Lydenburg received 75mm of rain last weekend. This is thought to have possibly caused the road surface to become unstable.

The Lydenburg Traffic Department was on the scene, as were other emergency services from Lydenburg.
