Limpopo SAPS: Surrender firearms when lawful owner dies

The police received information about the firearms that were not surrendered and declared to them after the death of the lawful owner, believed to be the husband of a 45-year-old woman.

The inheritance and illegal ownership of unlicensed firearms and ammunition following the death of a lawful owner has been strongly condemned by the Limpopo SAPS.

This emanates after three firearms were confiscated at a residence in Tubatse on May 23 at about 07:30.

The police received information about the firearms that were not surrendered and declared to them after the death of the lawful owner, believed to be the husband of a 45-year-old woman.

“The SAPS immediately rushed to the premises and found the suspect with her sister who consented to the house being searched.
“During the search, the police discovered a safe, which was opened and subsequently found one rifle with 316 rounds of ammunition, one firearm with three magazines and a hunting rifle with 16 rounds of ammunition,” said the Limpopo police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.

The woman was charged with illegal possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition that were supposed to be surrendered immediately after her husband’s death.

The suspect is expected to appear at Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court soon while investigations continue.
