NDMC finalises Mpumalanga flood damage assessment

The National Treasury must first approve the requests before the funds can be distributed to all affected provinces and municipalities.

The National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) has finalised the flood damaged assessment reports and the funds will be released as soon as National Treasury (NT) gives the go ahead.

The spokesperson for the National Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Legadima Leso, said it has assessed all documents for the six provinces and approved them. All that remains now is for the NT to approve the financial requests.

“The National Treasury has to approve the requests first so that the funds can be released to all affected provinces and municipalities, including Mpumalanga. This is done in line with the Division of Revenue Act and the NT has to approve the release of funds,” he said.

The NT confirmed that it had received the final assessment from the NDMC. It is also conducting its own assessment and will comment further once all of the documents have been reviewed

Some of the damaged roads remain closed. The section of the R40 next to the Klipkopjes Dam still operates on a stop-and-go basis. The route between Sabie and Hazyview, and the R40 between Barberton and the Josefsdal Border Post, are closed until further notice.
