Law enforcement working on easing Lebombo Border congestion

The Mpumalanga police and the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison said they are working to open the N4 and R571 near the Lebombo Border.

Mpumalanga law enforcement has said it is working on clearing the major traffic backlog along the N4 and R571 near the Lebombo Border after it was closed off by trucks today, June 6.

The roads had been closed since the early hours of the morning, with the backlog starting at the Tenbosch/N4 junction, about 20km from the border post.

The Border Management Authority’s commissioner, Major General David Chilembe, had told Lowvelder that the closure is a combination of trucks awaiting proceed-to-port permits, a high volume of them attempting to enter the border post, as well as drivers not obeying the rules of the road and blocking lanes.

The Mananga, R571, Tenbosch and Strydomblok roads are all affected.

The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison’s spokesperson, Moeti Mmusi, said law enforcement officers are working to bring the situation under control.

“Traffic is moving quite slowly, but the police will be on high alert for any mischief that may arise,” said Mmusi.

A provincial SAPS spokesperson, Captain Magonseni Nkosi, said there is still a challenge on the roads, but the police and other law enforcement agencies have been on the scene ever since it started.

“They are still doing their best to contain the situation and will be there until everything is resolved.

“All stakeholders will work on possible strategies to avoid such a challenge in future,” said Nkosi.
