A hiker with a possible severe ankle injury was rescued by the Lowveld teams of Search and Rescue South Africa (Sarza) and ER24 in Waterval Boven.

The chairman of the Sarza Lowveld, Andrew Geldenhuys, said they responded to a request by Mountain Search and Rescue from Gauteng at 16:30 on Saturday June 17, to assist with the extrication of the hiker.

The rescue was completed at about 03:00 on Sunday June 18.

Geldenhuys said the hiker fell and sustained a possible fractured ankle.

“After a two-hour hike to get to the hiker, he was packaged for the five-hour extrication due to the extremely rough terrain. He was found next to the steam he slipped into. Due to the extent of the injury to his ankle, he could not walk the 3km to safety. He was transported by ER24 to Mbombela for further treatment.”
