500 youth to benefit from partnership between FTLM and DFFE
The programme will also address the high rate of unemployment among the youth.
More than 500 local youths are expected to benefit from a partnership between the Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality (FTLM) and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE).
The two institutions entered into a partnership in which 517 young unemployed graduates will be enrolled
into an 18-month youth empowerment and development programme.
The R36m programme will see local youth participate in occupational health and safety and waste management
campaigns, forestry monitoring, river protection, as well as climate change ambassadorships.
“This partnership will see the municipality raising awareness on the effects of climate change and littering on the environment.
“The recruits will be spread throughout the wards of the municipality. They will interact with all stakeholders on
public education about the catastrophic effects of climate change and the unhealthy environment,” said the FTLM
spokesperson, Thabiso Mokoena.
According to the FTLM, this programme will also address the high rate of unemployment among the youth.
He said 60% of beneficiaries will be women, and 2% people living with disabilities.
“The FTLM has procured two new trucks for waste management, which will be used for waste collection and
removal. We are negotiating with the local mines to support the municipal greening initiatives, as this will contribute towards creation of jobs and business opportunities. The FTLM council has also approved the programme and the recruitment process for the intake is under way.
“Fetakgomo Tubatse is committed to fight against climate change to preserve the future for the younger generation,” said Mokoena.
