Two traffic department officers arrested for corruption in Mkhuhlu

An entrapment operation by law enforcement saw the arrest of two traffic department officals at the Mkhuhlu Driver's Licence Testing Centre.

Two Mkhuhlu Driver’s Licence Testing Centre employees were arrested for corruption today, January 15.

The Hawks’ spokesperson, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi, said the two officials, aged 45 and 47, were arrested by the Nelspruit Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation Unit during an entrapment operation at the centre.

She said a woman had gone to the centre on January 8 to write a learner’s test and failed. A female examiner, who was invigilating the test, approached the woman and allegedly told her that she could pass the test if she paid her R1 000.

Sekgotodi said an agreement was made and the woman was set to go back to the centre to write her test again on Monday January 15.

She said the matter was reported to the Hawks and a Section 252A authority was granted.

“The complainant was used as an agent and positively transacted with the target. After the transaction, it was found there were other learners who also paid the gratification to pass the learner’s licence test,” said Sekgotodi.

She said the R1 000 was recovered, and an extra R9 600 was confiscated from the two suspects. “Other applicants who were also writing the test on Monday also submitted their statements, since they allegedly paid gratification as well.”

The two suspects are expected to appear in the Mkhuhlu Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday January 16.

Sekgotodi urged members of the public who have paid the two suspects off to come forward and submit their statements.
