City of Mbombela in a clean state

The City of Mbombela took to cleaning the whole town and continued with grass-cutting following the ANC's 112th anniversary celebrations of January 13, 2024.

With the ANC’s 112th anniversary celebrations now past, the City of Mbombela’s (CoM) clean-up efforts seem to have swept through the whole city, leaving it neat and tidy.

The celebrations took place at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday January 13, and while many residents had praised and appreciated the massive event that reportedly brought millions of rands into Mbombela and surrounding towns, many residents woke up the following day disappointed to see litter strewn around parts of the city.

The clean-up efforts, however, started on Sunday, and by Wednesday January 17, the roadsides, the middlemen on Samora Machel Drive, the ring road and around Mbombela Stadium were completely cleared.

The CoM’s executive mayor, Cllr Sibongile Makushe-Mazibuko, said the whole city was targeted for a clean-up in the days following the ANC’s 112th anniversary celebrations. She said that while most of the activities resulting in litter being left behind occurred around Mbombela Stadium, there were also pockets in the Mbombela CBD that had some litter as well.

Makushe-Mazibuko said teams from the CoM went to work immediately after the celebrations ended, also mowing grass around the city. She said the grass-cutting started late last year already, but was halted temporarily due to the rains. It has continued this year.

She also reminded the public that grass-cutting along the R40 and the N4 is not in the jurisdiction of the municipality, but rather provincial government.

“We appreciate all those who worked hard to ensure the city was restored. We also appreciated the citizens for their calmness, patience and understanding during the clean-up process,” she said.
