Cats must be purr-fectly comfortable and safe when being transported

A cluster of cats was recently transported from Lydenburg to the Nelspruit SPCA in a very uncomfortable way. The Nelspruit SPCA said it is willing to give safety guidelines to members of the public who are transporting any pets.

A cluster of cats from Lydenburg was transported to the Nelspruit SPCA in a way that is being called ‘absolutely shocking’.

This has led to the centre realising that it it necessary to educate members of the public how to transport animals in the most humane way.

According to the Nelspruit SPCA’s chairperson, Lize Pienaar, 13 cats were admitted on Saturday January 27 from a centre in Lydenburg.

“To bring them to us was absolutely the right thing to do. But the manner in which they were transported was shocking. A total of seven adult cats were transported in one plastic crate. The lid had a few holes, but the space inside the crate and the ventilation were not adequate at all.

When we opened the lid, they just jumped out in all directions, they were so relieved. They could barely breathe inside the crate and they were soaking wet. They also urinated in the crate. This was a trip of 100km in the Lowveld heat. They could not stop drinking water. They have all been fed and are safe and relaxed in our catteries,” said Pienaar.

While talking to Lowvelder, it was made clear that the public should be educated on animal transport, for which there are different requirements for different species. The public is urged to contact the Nelspruit SPCA for guidelines.

Pienaar says all animals deserve compassion and the best possible treatment, including livestock and poultry on the way to abattoirs.

As for transporting cats and dogs, Pienaar said cats must be transported in a carrier with adequate space to move and proper ventilation. The carrier must be in good condition and the latches must close properly. If a carrier is not available, a box with a proper lid can be used. There must be enough holes for proper ventilation and space to move around. The carrier or box must only be opened in a secure area should the cat try to escape.

Meanwhile, dogs can be transported in a motor vehicle and must wear a leash in all instances where he is taken out of the vehicle. If transported in the back of a truck, there should be a canopy with proper ventilation and a grid over the open part of the window to prevent the dog from jumping through the window.
Dogs must never be transported on the back of an open bakkie as they can jump off and get injured. They must also not be tied up on the back of a bakkie as they cam jump off and get strangled.

She also said during the transport of cats and dogs, water must always be available and regular stops for dogs are vital (on a leash).

Dog owners can also obtain medication from their veterinarian to calm their dogs and cats before going on a trip with them.

“Heatstroke can kill an animal within a very short period of time, and all necessary steps must be taken to ensure that the trip is as comfortable as possible for your furry friend,” concluded Pienaar.
