Duane Vermeulen’s boyhood chased in Mbombela
The purpose of the visit was to discover the story behind the story of Duane Vermeulen, a key member of the 2023 Springbok World Cup winning team, who is an alumnus of Laerskool and Hoërskool Nelspruit (NHS).
A content team led by well-known South African entertainment personality, the content director Frankie Opperman, visited Mbombela this week to conduct interviews and shoot footage for Chasing the Sun 2.
The other members of the crew were cinematographer, Devin Carter, and sound operator, Keagan Cannel.
The highly anticipated inside story of the Springboks’ 2023 Rugby World Cup campaign, a five-part documentary, is the sequel to Chasing the Sun, the award-winning story of the Springboks’ journey to capture the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
This follow-up once again goes behind the dressing room door to give a unique insight into the campaign to retain the title despite facing the toughest ever route to the title put before any champion team.

The documentary is a co-production between SuperSport and SA Rugby and tells a story of pride and passion, diversity and determination, of hope and humility and, ultimately, resilience and perseverance.
The Chasing the Sun 2 team interviewed Vermeulen’s mother, Estelien, on Monday, as well as NHS principal Johan Hattingh and his former hospitality studies teacher, Erna Janse van Rensburg, who taught Vermeulen, on Tuesday February 13.
The camera crew also shot footage of the Rhinos rugby team at NHS’s rugby field late on Tuesday afternoon.
Chasing the Sun 2 will air on M-Net (DStv channel 101) and on SuperSport Grandstand (DStv channel 201) on Sunday March 24.
