Aircraft makes forced landing on N4 near Ngodwana

A pilot had to make a forced landing on the N4 near Ngodwana this afternoon, March 9, when he experienced a rough-running engine in flight.

The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) said that a Cessna 172 ZS-KUJ aircraft with three people on board had to make a forced landing on the N4 near Ngodwana on the afternoon of March 9.

The SACAA’s Sisa Majola said the aircraft had been flying from Mbombela to Middelburg when it began experiencing a “rough-running engine”.

The N4 between Arlie and Malaga Hotel was subsequently closed for a brief time for the removal of the aircraft.

The Aeronautical Rescue Co-ordination Centre’s chief, Gregory Critchley, said the centre had activated first responders from Mpumalanga to a mayday call received from a light aircraft intercepted by Air Traffic Control in the Ngodwana area of Mpumalanga.

He said members of Disaster Management Mpumalanga, TRAC, the police and Sappi security assisted in the temporary road closure and scene control on the N4.

Majola said the SACAA’s Accident Incident Investigation Division did not dispatch to the site, but that it is in the process of collecting all the relevant information related to the occurrence.
