Barberton Regional Court convicts two copper thieves

The two were fined R20 000 or six years' imprisonment each. They were also sentenced to eight years' imprisonment, which was suspended for five years on condition that they are not convicted of theft during the period of suspension.

Lukhanyo Mzilikazi (30) and Qiniso Mkhize (46) were found guilty and sentenced by the Barberton Regional Court for possession of copper cables.

According to the Hawks spokesperson, Captain Dineo Sewkgotodi, on May 8, 2023, the Hawks received information regarding a white Toyota Quantum towing a trailer that was transporting copper cables on the R40 road towards Barberton.

The said vehicle was monitored through surveillance, and followed by crime intelligence and the Hawks Nelspruit-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation, in conjunction with Crime Combined Private Investigations, the Provincial Traffic Department, and Hi-Tech Security.

“The vehicle was spotted, stopped, and searched at the R38 Badplaas road turn-off. The driver of the vehicle introduced himself as Lukhanyo Mzilikazi and his crewman as Qiniso Mkhize, both from Vryheid in KwaZulu-Natal. During the search of the vehicle, copper cables were found hidden in a special compartment in the trailer. Both were immediately arrested for possession of copper cables and detained,” she said.

Sekgotodi added that the vehicle, trailer, cables, and cellphones were seized, taken to the Barberton SAPS, and registered as exhibits. Both accused appeared in court on several occasions until the case was finalised.

Each was fined R20 000 or six years’ imprisonment. In addition, each was sentenced to eight years years in prison, which was suspended for five years on the condition that they are not convicted of theft during the period of suspension.

Both accused were further declared unfit to possess firearms.
