Woman shot multiple times in Masoyi, sustains only flesh wounds

A woman was driving in the Masoyi area with her husband in the passenger seat and three other occupants in the back when he allegedly shot her multiple times.

A 35-year-old woman survived multiple gunshots on Friday March 29, and reportedly drove herself to the Phola Ntsikazi Clinic for help.

ER24 Lowveld’s regional manager, Greg Wilcox, said they received a call about a woman who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the Masoyi area just after 18:30 that evening. He said the woman (35) arrived at the Phola Ntsikazi Clinic, and they transferred her to Mediclinic Nelspruit for treatment.

She had received gunshot wounds to her chest, right arm and hand. He said all the wounds were flesh wounds and that she was in a very stable condition.

Mediclinic Nelspruit’s Liza Pillay said the woman was treated and has since been discharged. Masoyi Police Station’s spokesperson, Sergeant Nanikie Nonyane, said the woman was in the car with her husband when an argument broke out. She had been driving the car while her husband was in the passenger seat. There were two young children and another relative seated in the back.

Nonyane said the husband allegedly pulled out a gun and shot her multiple times. She drove herself to the clinic, with everyone still in the car. Nonyane said a case of attempted murder was opened by the police, however, the victim wanted to withdraw it.

A provincial police spokesperson, Captain Magonseni Nkosi, said the man’s gun was confiscated and a case of attempted murder is still being investigated by the police. The firearm will also undergo ballistic testing.

“We will also need a medical report to check the bullet wounds, and how it impacted the victim. Then the court will decide to proceed with the case or withdraw it, since the victim is the witness in the case. Our duty as the police is to investigate the matter,” he said.

Nonyane is calling on members of the public to refrain from withdrawing cases of gender-based violence (GBV). “We have a lot of cases in the Masoyi area where people are victims of GBV, and they do come and press charges, but later withdraw them.”

She said the Masoyi police have had some incidents in which victims of GBV who had opened cases and then withdrew them, were later killed.
