The suspects fled empty-handed after realising that police had been alerted and were on their way. No injuries were reported.

Swift action by police resulted in an attempted cash-in-transit (CIT) heist being thwarted on Friday June 28. The incident occurred on the Mngwenya Road towards the N4 in KaNyamazane.

According to a provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, the CIT vehicle was travelling towards the N4 when a dark brown Mercedes-Benz hit it from behind and the driver of the van subsequently lost control of the vehicle.

“A group of armed suspects held the security officers at gunpoint before they placed explosive devices onto the security van. It seemed as if they intended to detonate these explosive devices, however, they soon realised that the police were on their way after being alerted about the incident,” Mdhluli said.

It is further reported that the Mercedes-Benz used in this incident was torched by the suspects before they fled the scene to evade arrest.
