Nelspruit Regional Court postpones JJ Peters case to August

JJ Peters was expected to plead during his appearance but the matter was postponed due to the presiding officer being off sick.

JJ Peters’s case was postponed again to August 5 due to the presiding officer being on sick leave.

Peters appeared in the Nelspruit Regional Court on Monday to start with his trial, but the state requested that the matter be postponed until the presiding officer was back in court.

Peters has been in police custody for 28 months without a trial or plea after he abandoned his official bail application during his third district court appearance on March 16, 2022.

He was arrested for allegedly killing his grandmother, Sannie Strydom Kilmister (68), on February 28, 2022. At the time of her death, he had been sharing her house on a smallholding in the Cromdale area.

On January 30, 2023, Peters’s legal team requested that he undergo mental observation before his murder trial could proceed, to ensure he was fit to stand trial and that he understood the gravity of the crime he allegedly committed. The court found him fit.
