R40 sinkhole near White River still not fixed

A contractor has been appointed to repair the sinkhole and was introduced to the City of Mbombela, but it's still going to take another two months before the actual work can start.

While repairs are being done to some parts of the R40 that was damaged by floods last year, no repairs to the sinkhole near to the popular Klipkopjes Dam have been undertaken.

Almost two years after the Lowveld’s floods, this stretch of road, where a large section of the road simply broke off and fell away, is still operating on a stop-and-go basis.

Sanral’s northern region project manager Tony Seloana said the contractor had been appointed to repair the sinkhole and was introduced to the City of Mbombela (COM).

“The contractor handover meeting was held on June 12 to establish the project liaison committee [PLC] and to allow the establishment of a construction site camp. The contractor has two months from the handover date to establish the site and formulate a PLC. Physical work can only start after the mobilisation period,” said Seloana.

He did not divulge when the contractor would physically be on-site, but an official announcement will be made once the work has started.

He also said some repairs to the R40 are already in progress.
