Rapes and mob justice increase in Masoyi

Many of the reported cases involved boyfriends who raped their girlfriends daughters

The Masoyi police are concerned about the rise in rapes and mob justice in the area.

According to the Masoyi police’s spokesperson, Sergeant Nanikie Nonyane, the station has registered a number of cases in which some men had raped their girlfriends’ daughters and some other girls in the area.

“We are calling on men to refrain from raping, especially innocent kids while they are dating their mothers. We are calling on young and old mothers to look after their kids and not leave their children with a stranger or their boyfriends. We also warn girls to refrain from walking alone at night and to avoid getting drunk with strangers, as some of the rape cases arose during such occasions,” she said.

Nonyane said rape cases must be reported to the police immediately to be investigated and mothers must do the same when their daughters tell them they were raped.

She added that there are people who are taking the law into their own hands by beating up people caught stealing.

“We are currently investigating a murder case of a man who was beaten to death by community members after he was caught stealing. We condemn such acts. Instead, we encourage people to report any criminal activities to the police. When they catch criminals in action, they need to inform the police to handle the matter,” she urged.

Nonyane further said the most recent mob justice incident is not the only one being investigated. She warned people that when they are caught taking the law into their own hands, they will be dealt with.

The public should report any criminal activities on the Crime Stop number, 08600 10111, or provide information via the My SAPS app.
