Mpumalanga Department of Education warns public of social media scammers

The education department urged the community to alert the proper authorities if someone demanded money from them to secure a job.

Following the Mpumalanga Department of Education’s (DoE) discovery of a bogus Facebook account using its HoD Lucy Moyane’s name and MEC Cathy Dlamini’s photos on December 31, it has warned the public to remain cautious.

In a conversation on Facebook Messenger, the person behind the bogus account seems to be assuring another Facebook user that they are Moyane. “I’m sure you know me already,” one message reads.

“This is not the first time that scammers have created bogus Facebook accounts related to the department. We call upon the public to be extra vigilant with these types of accounts,” the DoE’s spokesperson, Gerald Sambo, said on January 2.

The conversation on Facebook Messenger between the scammer claiming to be Lucy Moyane and another of the platform’s users.

He said these scammers usually post job vacancies, especially teaching positions. “They sometimes demand money from applicants, and some people have lost more than R5 000 in the past.

“As a department, we do not sell jobs but rely on applicants’ qualifications. If anyone demands money for a position with the department, report it to the relevant authorities immediately.”

Sambo urged community members to always double-check with their nearest DoE offices, if they receive something suspicious from someone claiming to be from the department.
