Seven undocumented foreigners arrested for possession of illegal mining equipment in Sabie

The suspects were found in possession of phendukas, gas cylinders, motors, oxygen cylinders and generators.

Police arrested seven foreign nationals, aged from 18 to 67, for the alleged possession of illegal mining equipment and contravening the Immigration Act, in Simile, yesterday, Friday, March 28.

A police spokesperson, Captain Mpho Nonyane, said the suspects, who were arrested during Operation Vala Ungodi, were found to be undocumented foreign nationals. 

“During the operation, illegal mining equipment was confiscated, which included phendukas, gas cylinders, motors, oxygen cylinders and generators.

“The suspects are expected to appear in the Sabie Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of contravention of the Immigration Act of South Africa,” she said.

Nonyane added that this operation is aimed at fighting illegal mining activity in the province. The arrests were a result of a collaboration between the police and Phoenix Security.

The suspects were found in possession of phendukas, oxygen cylinders, gas cylinders and more.
