Learners at Summerhill Prep School had the opportunity to explore planet Earth and far beyond, using virtual reality.

As making learning fun is the norm at Summerhill Prep School, the mobile planetarium, Edudome, visited the school to give learners a glimpse of the blue planet on which they live.

According to the school principal, Cheryl Calmeyer, it was an opportunity for learners to explore planet Earth and far beyond, using virtual reality.

It included an informative astronomy section for older pupils, which aligns with the school’s Junior Field Guides Association of Southern Africa curriculum. Not only did the learners from Grades 000 to Seven enjoy the day, even the teachers became a part of the adventure. “A highlight for most was the Formula 1 race at the end. It was very entertaining watching the children ‘drive’ and lean into the turns as they ‘navigated’ the track,” she said.

Calmeyer added that Edudome’s mobile planetarium visited the school several years ago. “This year we opted for their virtual reality programme. Grades 000 to Four did the space, planet Earth and adventure programme, while grades five to seven did astronomy.

“The children loved it, because they could look around and up and down. It was such fun to see them reach out and try to touch their surroundings.”
