R538 in Masoyi reopens after protests

Motorists are urged to drive with caution as some debris remains on the road.

The R538 in Swalala has been reopened after a closure due to protests as the community demands the repair of an Eskom transformer.

This morning, April 22, as burning tyres, rocks and tree branches littered the road. The protesters claimed they have been without electricity for more than six months, saying that Eskom and the ward councillor have ignored them.

We decided to close the road to raise our concerns, as those who are supposed to assist us don’t. We are going to disrupt the traffic every day until our grievances are heard. All we want is for our transformer be fixed. We are suffering. Winter is coming and our kids bath with cold water,” they complained.

Despite the road being reopened and protests halted, some debris is still on the road. The police are urging motorists to drive with caution and to consider using alternative routes as the protest may restart. The police are monitoring the situation. Eskom’s provincial spokesperson, Erick Khoza, was not available for a comment by the time of publishing.
