Residents in Tubatse have raised serious concerns about water shortages in the town.
According to them, there has been a constant, steady supply of water to the area in past years, but lately, water shortages are reported on weekly basis.
One of the residents said pipe leaks seem to be the reason for these shortages.
“We report water problems to both the Sekhukhune District Municipality [SDM] and the water utility, Lepelle Northern Water [LNW], but after a day or two, the water shortages resume again. This is despite community members consistently paying for water. Imagine paying for something you’re not getting,” complained one of the residents.
Some of the affected areas are Motaganeng, Mooifontein, Ext 5, Elephant Hill, Tubatse Mews, Mooikloof and some parts of the CBD.
Residents who spoke to this paper complained that the SDM does not seem to respect their rights in this regard, because water is a basic human right.

This publication forwarded queries to both LNW and the SDM.
LNW’s Joe Makhafola said: “LNW has allocated three boreholes to support the Burgersfort Conventional Plant.
The total water produced at the plant averages 8.5Ml/d. Currently the town is experiencing the water shortage even though the water demand of the town is 7.8Ml/d.”
He said they will continue to monitor the situation to ensure that residents get water.
On April 14, this publication forwarded queries to the SDM’s spokesperson, Lemson Moropjane. He had not responded by the time of going to press.
