SAPS confiscates fake goods worth R20m in Burgersfort

The investigation into the origin of the goods is still under way.

The SAPS seized counterfeit goods worth more than R20m in the Burgersfort CBD on May 26 and 28.

Members of the National Counterfeit Unit, the National Roving Team, Burgersfort SAPS, and SARS’s Customs Division raided more than 10 shops in town after receiving a tip-off about suspicious goods. They recovered counterfeit products, including clothing and cosmetics.

“The total value of the recovered stock is more than R20m. The confiscated goods are currently being held by the police,” confirmed the Limpopo SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.

He said they have yet to arrest any suspects in relation to this matter. Police investigations into the origin of the counterfeit goods are ongoing.

The Limpopo police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, commended the team for swiftly operationalising the information.

She also sent out a stern warning to communities and businesses that buy or sell suspected stolen goods and fake items.

“People found in possession of such goods will be arrested and prosecuted.”
